A Season in Wonderland – Spring 2010 Preview

January 14, 2010

It may be the middle of January, but when you live in LA, winter doesn’t really exist. So, though I do wish to relish in the winter season’s beauty trends, the sun’s glow today has got me springing forward…

While going down the 405, I noticed a new billboard along the freeway promoting Tim Burton’s upcoming rendition of “Alice in Wonderland.” Let me tell you, I cannot be more excited for this movie, coming out this March!

While watching the new trailer, I couldn’t help but gawk at the fantastic makeup! And though these looks may be rather avant-garde for the rest of us, I can see traces of this spring’s beauty trends through the looking glass:

1. Natural pink lips, a la Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska)

2. Dramatic lashes, a la the White Queen (played by Anne Hathaway)

3. Bright playful eye and lip colors, a la the Mad Hatter (played by Johnny Depp)

Keep an eye out for these trends and more when we review the Spring 2010 collections of our favorite makeup brands, like Lancome, MAC, and Chanel, in the next couple weeks. However, if you’re impatient to get a heads start, I recommend trying out the following products:

For barely there lips like Alice, try a nude lipstick or gloss in a shade just a hint darker than your natural lip color. We’ve got some pretty options already on

Left to right: Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Gloss in Dusk #2 ($14.oo), Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Giggle ($18.90), MAC Slimshine Lipstick in Bare ($10.15), Smashbox O-Plump Intuitive Lip Plumper ($16.80), Smashbox O-Gloss Intuitive Lip Color ($15.40).

Your lashes will get more “oomph” if you draw a thin but distinct line close to your lash line. A liquid liner will work best, like Lancome’s Artliner in Noir ($19.60 on Next, apply a lash-lengthening mascara–Chanel’s Inimitable mascara lengthens, plumps, and curls in one easy step! ($21.00 on

To get the complete “White Queen” look, use a pale eyeshadow as a highlight in the inner corners of your eyes and right under the brow. I suggest MAC’s pigment eyeshadow in Polished Ivory for a highlight, then finishing with Your Ladyship on the lid (MAC pigments are $13.65 on

Lancome Artliner (front), Chanel Inimitable Mascara (left), MAC Pigments in Polished Ivory (top right) and Your Ladyship (bottom right).

Finally, if you just want to let loose, feel free to go “mad” with a variety of colors for your eyes and lips! The Mad Hatter apparently hasn’t met a color he doesn’t like, wearing high-wattage blues, oranges, purples, and pinks! A party of products awaits your imagination:

MAC Pigments in Tea Time (bottom left), Clear Sky Blue (bottom middle), Spiritualize (bottom right), Your Ladyship (middle left), French Violet (middle right), Ruby Red (top); MAC Lipstick in Girl About Town, Chanel Rouge Double Intensive Ultra Wear Lip Colour in Tourmaline, YSL Mosaic Eye Palette Mauresque, YSL Sun Collection Palette D'Afrique
